Silent Music Seeing Sound
An exhibition of graphic scores made in collaboration with Raymond MacDonald. This new suite of works made to direct small groups of musicians, used laser-cut woodblocks and are hand printed. They were made for exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy of Art and Architecture in Edinburgh, 2019, and then travelled to Newcastle Art Centre as part of the Newcastle Festival of Jazz and Improvised Music in  September of 2021.

At the opening preview on Saturday 25th September the graphic scores were  performed by Raymond MacDonald with George Burt and Andy Champion, alongside an artists talk with Jo Ganter and Raymond.

Exhibited framed on the walls of the galleries, they scores also sat on the music stands during performances. Ganter and MacDonald write short explanatory notes for the musicians to direct their reading of each image. Compositional elements in the images can convey organizational and relational features in the music, for example, solo, duo or trio events. Colour and shape might denote instrumentation, texture of music, pitch and tone. Time is often expressed through the horizontal and vertical lines of the compositions.
